# ACT Practice and Scores: Everything the Enhanced ACT Changed (2026)

**Your ACT Composite no longer includes science.** It now averages English, math, and reading, and science has become an optional section that earns you a separate science score plus a STEM score if you choose to sit it.

That's one of four changes ACT made to the test. The others: the exam is **75 minutes shorter**, it has **44 fewer questions**, and math questions now offer **four answer choices instead of five**. You can also pick online or paper.

Most ACT prep you'll find online describes the test before all of that. Here's what changed, what it means for how you study, and the prompts that generate practice for the version you're going to sit.

## Check Which ACT You Are Sitting First

The rollout is staggered, and getting this wrong wastes weeks.

If you're a state or district tester this year, science is still mandatory for you, the Composite still counts it, and skipping it means **no Composite is generated at all**. Confirm your administration with your counsellor before you plan around an optional section. ## Four Answer Choices Changes the Guessing Math

This is the change nobody has recalculated. Math used to give five options, so a blind guess paid off one time in five, or 20%. Four options means one in four, or 25%.

The ACT has no penalty for a wrong answer, so you should already have been filling every bubble. What's different is the value of partial elimination.

Knock out one option of four and you're at 33%. Knock out two and you're at 50%, which used to take eliminating three of five. Elimination got cheaper, so the skill worth drilling is spotting the one option that's obviously wrong.

The reason is structural: English tests a finite set of grammar and punctuation rules rather than anything you have to know about the world.

The extra time per question helps here more than anywhere, because reading was the section where students most often ran out of clock. More time per question does not fix a strategy problem, though.
