# Compound and Complex Sentences: Count the Clauses and the Rest Follows

**Every English sentence you'll ever write is one of four structures, and the test that sorts them is counting, not measuring.** A twenty-word sentence can be simple. A six-word one can be compound. What decides the type is how many clauses it holds and how they're joined, and once you count clauses instead of words, compound and complex sentences stop being the part of the grammar test you guess at.

This hub teaches the clause test first, then hands you an identifier or a fixer for every place the test gets failed: run-ons, fragments, and the agreement errors that hide inside longer sentences.

## Start With the Clause, Because Everything Is Built From It

A clause is a subject plus a verb. If it also completes a thought, it's an independent clause and can stand alone as a sentence. If it doesn't, it's a dependent clause, and it needs an independent partner. "When the bus finally came" has a subject and a verb, but you're still waiting to hear what happened, and that waiting is the whole definition.

- Paste a paragraph into the **[Independent Clause Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/independent-clause-identifier)** and it marks every clause that could stand alone.
- Its partner, the **[Dependent Clause Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/dependent-clause-identifier)**, flags the ones that can't, with the word that made them dependent.
- Phrases complicate the count because they look like clauses without carrying both parts. The **[Clause vs Phrase Explainer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/clause-vs-phrase-explainer)** splits the two for any sentence you feed it.

## The Four Sentence Structures, Counted

The [rank-one sentence structure lesson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smgyeUomfyA), watched over four million times, is built on one warning: length never decides type. Its worked example is a long sentence that stays simple "because it has one subject and one verb." Two traps make long simple sentences look compound. A compound subject ("The table and chairs need to be cleaned") is still one clause. So is a compound verb ("The boy smiled and nodded").

| Structure | The count | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Simple sentence | One independent clause | The bus was late. |
| Compound sentence | Two or more independent clauses, joined | The bus was late, but the driver made up time. |
| Complex sentence | One independent clause plus at least one dependent clause | Because the bus was late, I missed the quiz. |
| Compound-complex sentence | Two or more independent clauses plus at least one dependent | Because the bus was late, I missed the quiz, and the retake wasn't until Friday. |

These four types of sentences cover everything you'll ever read or write. The **[Sentence Types Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/sentence-types-identifier)** runs the table against your own paragraph and labels every sentence, and the usual surprise is discovering your writing lives in one row.

## Compound Sentences Run on FANBOYS

Two independent clauses can't sit side by side with nothing between them. The legal joins are a comma plus a [coordinating conjunction](https://agentdock.ai/academy/prepositions-and-conjunctions-the-parts-of-speech-that-decide-a-sentence), and there are exactly seven of those: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. FANBOYS. The lesson's quiz line "He was hungry, so he ate" is a compound sentence at six words, which is the counting test doing its work.

A [semicolon](https://agentdock.ai/academy/the-em-dash-is-not-the-tell-what-punctuation-signals) can also weld two independent clauses without a conjunction, though that move belongs to formal writing and exam graders love to test it. The **[Coordinating Conjunction Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/coordinating-conjunction-identifier)** finds every FANBOYS join in your draft, and the **[Oxford Comma Explainer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/oxford-comma-explainer)** settles the list-comma argument that compound structures keep reopening.

## Complex Sentences and the Comma That Moves

A dependent clause can open the sentence or close it, and the comma rule rides on that choice. Dependent clause first, comma required: "Although Matt was running late, he seemed relaxed." Independent clause first, no comma: "He seemed relaxed although he was running late." Same clauses, same meaning, one comma appearing and disappearing.

The words that create dependent clauses are subordinating conjunctions: because, although, when, since, unless, while, and their cousins. The **[Subordinating Conjunction Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/subordinating-conjunction-identifier)** tags them in your writing, so you can see where your complex sentences begin and whether the comma landed on the right side.

## Two Ways a Sentence Breaks

Both classic sentence errors are clause-joining failures, and both have a dedicated fixer.

- A run-on sentence jams independent clauses together without a legal join, either with nothing or with only a comma, the infamous comma splice. Feed one to the **[Run-on Sentence Fixer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/run-on-sentence-fixer)** and it repairs the splice three ways, so you pick the rhythm you wanted instead of accepting a default.
- A sentence fragment is the opposite failure, a dependent clause or phrase punctuated as if it were complete. "Because the bus was late." reads fine in speech and dies on paper. The **[Sentence Fragment Fixer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/sentence-fragment-fixer)** turns fragments into full sentences without flattening your phrasing.
- When a sentence is technically legal but shapeless, the **[Sentence Rewriter](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/sentence-rewriter)** rebuilds it in several structures, so you can compare the simple version against the complex one before committing.

## The Errors That Hide Inside Long Sentences

Longer structures create distance between words that must agree, and distance is where agreement dies. Subject verb agreement breaks when a prepositional phrase sneaks between subject and verb. Pronouns drift from their antecedents across clause boundaries. Verb tenses wander mid-paragraph.

Three checkers cover that ground. The **[Subject-Verb Agreement Checker](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/subject-verb-agreement-checker)** catches the singular-subject-plural-verb slips. Its pronoun sibling, the **[Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement Checker](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/pronoun-antecedent-agreement-checker)**, traces every pronoun in your draft back to its owner. For tense drift, the **[Verb Tense Consistency Checker](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/verb-tense-consistency-checker)** flags the paragraph that starts in past tense and finishes in present. And when a modifier attaches to the wrong noun entirely, the **[Dangling Modifier Fixer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/dangling-modifier-fixer)** rescues sentences like "Running for the bus, my backpack broke."

## Building the Skill When English Isn't Your First Language

Grammar rules you can recite aren't grammar you can use at speed, and the gap between the two closes with targeted repetition. The **[ESL Grammar Practice Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/language/esl-grammar-practice-generator)** builds fresh drill sets on one pattern at a time, so a week of compound-sentence joins is a week of nothing else. The **[ESL Verb Tense Practice Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/language/esl-verb-tense-practice-generator)** brings that one-pattern discipline to English's tense system. For catch-the-error practice, the **[Grammar Error Correction Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/language/grammar-error-correction-practice-generator)** plants mistakes in sentences for you to find, which trains the spotting skill exams reward. Word-level slips like their and there are a separate hunt, and the [commonly confused words](https://agentdock.ai/academy/commonly-confused-words-every-pair-that-survives-your-spellchecker) list covers every pair a spellchecker lets through.

Drills work better when the misses have somewhere to live. I keep a [Dock Editor](https://agentdock.ai/dock/editor) document open per skill, paste in every sentence I got wrong, and rerun the drill on that list a week later. Your first week there doesn't cost anything.

| Option | What you get | Best for | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|
| A grammar checker app | Silent corrections as you type | Shipping an email in the next five minutes | It fixes without teaching, so the same error returns tomorrow |
| Printable grammar practice worksheets | Fixed exercise sets with answer keys | Classrooms that need paper | The set never adapts to which errors are yours |
| The identifiers and fixers above | Analysis of sentences you wrote | Learning the structures on your own writing | You want silent autocorrect, not explanations |

Why bother with any of this? The rank-one lesson's answer is the practical one: using all the structures "makes our writing more engaging for the reader." Four simple sentences in a row is the flattest paragraph you can produce, and one dependent clause fixes it. Read back the last paragraph you wrote, count the structures, and if every sentence is one clause, you know which drill to run tonight. The full grammar bench lives in the [writing prompt library](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/category/writing).
