# Free Flashcard Maker: 21 Generators That Write the Cards, Not Just the Boxes (2026)

**Every flashcard maker on the first page of Google hands you a blank card and wishes you luck.** Quizlet, Canva, the app stores: the interface is solved. What none of them solve is the part that decides whether the cards work, which is what you write on them.

That part has rules. The best-known set comes from Thomas Frank's [flashcard video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzCEJVtED0U), and most of its eight rules are about writing, not reviewing: one question per card, both directions, pictures with the words, complex ideas broken into simple questions. Cards that break those rules produce what the video calls illusions of competence. You recognize the answer when you see it, and recognition feels exactly like knowing it, right up until the exam asks you to recall it cold.
