# How to Write an Essay: The Five-Part Structure Behind 6 Million Views (2026)

**The most useful essay lesson we've found tells you to hold your best ideas

His planning advice runs the same direction: "There is only one way to write an essay,
and that is to plan it," but "the plan is about what you don't say." You get your best

Wilson's word for part 4 is "the crunch," and his description of it is the article's
best sentence: after presenting both sides politely, "one, two, three reasons why your
position is wrong, and bang."

## Plan by Deciding What to Leave Out

Most students treat a plan as a miniature essay. Wilson has watched that fail from the

Wilson's rule for evidence is mechanical enough to check on every draft: "A quotation
by definition requires three sentences. A sentence to establish the quotation, to
quote, and then to explain the quotation."

The explaining sentence says which facet. Skip it and the quote is decoration.
