# Literary Devices: Stop Memorizing Definitions, Start Finding Them in the Text (2026)

**Every popular literary devices lesson does the same thing: it defines each device
with an invented example.** "Jim is a giraffe" for metaphor, and on through simile,
personification, hyperbole. Fine for a vocabulary quiz, and it can't do your assignment.

The assignment is never "define a simile." It's a passage in front of you and a
question about what the author is doing in it. Knowing that similes use "like" or "as"
doesn't find the three similes hiding in your chapter, and that gap between defining
and finding is where the marks go.

Every prompt below runs on **your** text. Paste the passage, get the devices that are
in it, with the lines quoted.

## Definitions Find Nothing. Identifiers Do.

| Tool | What it does | Best for | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|
| A definitions list | Tells you what a metaphor is | The night before a vocabulary quiz | The question is about a real passage |
| An identifier prompt | Marks the devices in your passage, lines quoted | Homework on an assigned text | You haven't read the passage yet |
| An analyzer prompt | Explains what one device is doing to the reader | Essay paragraphs about effect | You only need to name the device |

The **[Figurative Language Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/figurative-language-identifier)** is the general-purpose starting point: paste any passage and it marks what's there. The rest of this page is the specialist set.

## The Comparison Devices Get Confused With Each Other

Metaphor, simile and personification overlap in every classroom, and the tests that
separate them are mechanical.

A metaphor says something **is** something else. The classic classroom test is one
line: watch for the verb to be, "am, are, was, were." A simile compares with
"like" or "as." Personification gives human action to something that can't act.

- The **[Simile Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/simile-generator)** builds comparisons on your topic, which is the fastest way to feel the simile/metaphor line from the writing side.
- The **[Personification Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/personification-identifier)** finds the wind that howls and the sun that smiles in your passage, quoted.
- Analogy questions extend comparison into logic, and the **[Analogy Solver](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/analogy-solver)** works the A-is-to-B format tests use.

## Exaggeration and Sound Are the Easy Marks

- The **[Hyperbole Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/hyperbole-identifier)** separates deliberate exaggeration from plain description, which is the distinction graders want stated.
- The **[Alliteration Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/writing/alliteration-generator)** produces sound-device examples on your topic. Useful in reverse: seeing twenty makes them jump out of a poem.

## The Devices That Carry Whole Books

Single-line devices decorate. These structure, and they're where essay questions live.

- Foreshadowing questions ask you to connect an early line to a late event. The **[Foreshadowing Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/foreshadowing-analyzer)** traces those threads through a text.
- A motif is an image that keeps returning until it means something. The **[Motif Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/motif-identifier)** tracks the repetitions you half-noticed.
- The **[Archetype Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/archetype-identifier)** names the [character](https://agentdock.ai/academy/characterization-what-the-author-tells-you-and-what-you-have-to-catch) patterns (mentor, trickster, reluctant hero) that turn up across everything you'll be assigned.
- Two things placed side by side to clash is juxtaposition, and the **[Juxtaposition Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/juxtaposition-identifier)** finds the pairings worth writing about.
- When the narrator can't be trusted, that's the whole question. The **[Unreliable Narrator Evidence Finder](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/unreliable-narrator-evidence-finder)** collects the contradictions that prove it.

## Tone, Mood and Diction Are Devices Too

Essay feedback that says "go deeper" usually means moving from spotting objects to
analyzing choices. That's this set.

- The **[Tone Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/tone-analyzer)** names the author's attitude with the specific register the rubric wants, because "serious" earns nothing.
- Mood is the reader's side of the same coin, and the **[Mood Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/mood-analyzer)** separates the two cleanly.
- The **[Diction Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/diction-analyzer)** works word choice: why "slithered" instead of "walked," which is the level markers reward.
- The **[Connotation Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/connotation-analyzer)** covers the emotional loading that dictionary definitions miss.
- Where a scene happens is a choice too. The **[Setting Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/setting-analyzer)** treats place and time as devices with jobs.

## Openings and Structure Repay a Second Look

- First lines are engineered, and the **[Opening Line and Epigraph Analyzer](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/opening-line-and-epigraph-analyzer)** unpacks what a book's first sentence commits to.
- [Shakespeare](https://agentdock.ai/academy/shakespeare-translator-get-through-the-play-and-still-pass-the-essay) switches between verse and prose on purpose, and the switch is always an answer to an exam question. The **[Verse vs Prose in Drama Identifier](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/verse-vs-prose-in-drama-identifier)** maps where and why.
- The **[Plot Diagram Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/plot-diagram-generator)** lays a text onto [exposition-to-resolution structure](https://agentdock.ai/academy/rising-action-to-resolution-how-the-plot-diagram-works-element-by-element), which is the frame device questions assume you know.

## Turn Found Devices Into the Essay

Finding the device is half the assignment. The other half is saying what it does, and
that's a rhetorical move with its own guide in [how to write a rhetorical analysis](https://agentdock.ai/academy/how-to-write-a-rhetorical-analysis).

- The **[Literary Study Guide Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/literary-study-guide-generator)** assembles the devices, themes and quotes for a whole assigned text into one revision document.
- Historical context changes what a device means, and the **[Historical and Cultural Context Generator](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/education/reading/historical-cultural-context-generator)** supplies the background a passage assumes.

Wider study workflows live in the [prompts for students and teachers](https://agentdock.ai/academy/33-ai-prompts-for-students-and-teachers-that-actually-save-time) collection, and if you're drafting the essay itself, the [21 AI writing tools](https://agentdock.ai/academy/21-best-ai-writing-tools-and-prompts-for-every-style) rundown covers the tooling.

Keeping the passage, the found devices and your draft in one document is what makes
quote-based analysis fast, and the [Dock Editor](https://agentdock.ai/dock/editor) is free
for 7 days and runs these prompts against the document already open.

Take tonight's assigned reading, paste one page into the Figurative Language
Identifier, and count what it finds against what you spotted on your own read. The
difference is your gap, and now it has a name. [Browse every reading prompt](https://agentdock.ai/prompt-library/category/education) for the rest of the literature set.
