# Note-Taking Methods: Which Ones Survive Contact With How Memory Works (2026)

**The most popular note-taking advice on the internet is about making notes look good.** Layout, color, consistency. Whether any of it puts material into memory goes unasked, and that's the only question a note-taking method exists to answer.

His verdict on those years: "most of it was a waste of time." He now spends "probably a 20th of the time" he used to and says he's never been more confident in his learning.

Here's the sentence worth keeping from his 44 minutes:

You can fill pages for hours with your brain switched off. That changes the question from which method produces the best-looking page to which ones make you think while you're using them, and only some of them do.

## Nonlinear Beats Neat, and There's a Reason

Sung's sixth rule is the one with a mechanism behind it. "Knowledge fundamentally exists in networks, that's how our memory is organized," and information that doesn't connect to an existing network "our brain finds irrelevant and will prune."

A linear page can't express that. A nonlinear one makes you commit: this concept is bigger than that one, this arrow is thicker than that one. Making those calls is the thinking, and it also cuts the volume, which he calls "the key to reducing how volume heavy the notes are."

## Write Less, Which Means Cutting What You Already Wrote

Rule one is "write less, think more," and the version that helps you now is retroactive. You already have too many notes.

Color coding gets the same treatment. His medical-school system had investigations in blue, treatments in green, serious risks in red. Sensible-looking, and it taught him nothing.
