Comía and comí look one letter apart and mean different things entirely. Comía says someone used to eat, or was eating, a repeated or ongoing action without a clear endpoint. Comí says someone ate, once, and the action is finished. English collapses both into "ate" or "was eating" without forcing a choice, so a learner translating word by word has no instinct for which one Spanish needs at that moment.
