Voice Mode
Write by voice in the Dock Editor. Recording and transcription, freeform and selection modes, ghost-text preview, choosing between versions, style presets, and voice settings.
Voice Mode lets you speak instead of type. Dock turns what you say into clean prose, offers you a few versions to choose from, and only commits the one you pick. It is dictation that thinks about the writing, not a raw transcript.
Click the mic button in the footer toolbar, or press Cmd+Shift+M, to start recording. Dock asks for microphone permission the first time. Speak, and when you stop, your audio is turned into written prose.
Dock picks the mode from what you are doing:
- Freeform mode dictates new writing at your cursor. Use it to draft a paragraph by talking it through.
- Selection mode reworks text you have selected. Select a passage, speak how you want it changed, and Dock rewrites that passage from what you said.
You do not switch modes manually. If you have a selection when you start, Dock uses selection mode; otherwise it dictates freeform.
Both modes return a small set of versions, each with a short note describing its approach, so you are choosing between real alternatives rather than accepting the first pass. Read the versions, pick the one that fits, and it goes into the document.
The version you are considering previews inline as gray ghost text, in place, before you commit. You see how it will read in the document, then accept it or pick a different version. Nothing is written until you choose.
A style setting shapes how the prose comes out. The presets are:
- Match document, which follows the voice of what you have already written
- Creative
- Concise
- Custom, where you give your own instruction for how the writing should sound
Open the voice settings to set your style preset and your custom instruction. Your choice carries across voice sessions until you change it, so once you have tuned it to your writing you can keep dictating without resetting anything.
Voice Mode lives in the editor. To dictate and run your prompts in the text fields across the rest of your browser, including Gmail, ChatGPT, and Claude, add the Dock extension.
